Jorum Craft Award  

Deadline is 5pm, Monday 10 August  

The new Jorum Craft Award (£500) provides funding to assist with development of a maker’s creative practice, including but not limited to research and development of a new piece of work, project or collection. The Jorum Craft Award is supported by Jorum Studio, in association with Craft Scotland.

Craft Scotland Selects at The Scottish Gallery

2 - 26 September 2020

This September the Scottish Gallery and Craft Scotland have collaborated to present Craft Scotland Selects bringing together an impressive selection of makers based in Scotland.  

Collect 2021
25 - 28 February 2021 

Craft Scotland returns to Collect, the international art fair for modern craft and design. Held at Somerset House in London, expect to see an ambitious showcase of Scotland’s collectable contemporary craft.

Craft Scotland presents the British Craft Pavilion within the Handmade Designer Maker section of this international trade fair NY NOW. Subject to grants from the Department of International Trade.  

Open call for makers from across the UK, application details to be confirmed.  

Learning Programme 

Making Spaces  

Connecting communities with contemporary craft.  Through Making Spaces, Craft Scotland offers opportunities for people of all ages to engage with contemporary craft and work with makers from across Scotland. The act of making can actively improve quality of life and promote social inclusion and so we work with partners to deliver long-term projects for targeted groups and communities. 

Our current programme of activity is on hold due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) but we are working with MAKE to develop a new project focusing on the provision and development of craft education within Scotland’s primary and secondary schools. Further information will available soon.  

COMPASS Programme 2020/21 

COMPASS is Craft Scotland’s learning and development programme created specifically for makers. COMPASS focuses on developing talent and equipping individuals with the necessary skills to create a sustainable craft career and business. COMPASS is generously supported by the William Grant Foundation and Baillie Gifford.  

Emerging Maker Programme (1-3 years in business)  

The second cohort, 7 makers in the early stages of their craft career, are working through the revised 20/21 programme together. The programme will take a practical approach through a series of three one-day workshops, an immersive Five-day COMPASS Residential, one-to-one sessions and mentoring.  

Open call for next year’s cohort late Autumn 2020.

 
Established Maker Programme (4+ years in business) - Round 3 
Access tailored one to one support for makers who are established in their practice. This can consist of mentoring and specialist advice, or support for training and development, to develop themselves and/or their practice.  

Applications will open in late-Autumn 2020.

Craft & Cultural Conversations 

A new element in our programme, Craft Scotland will host Craft & Cultural Conversations across the year. Placing craft in a cultural context, these free talks will explore current social themes with a wide range of speakers.  

Research  

Market for Craft  

The Market for Craft  is a rich analysis of who is buying craft, why and where. Using survey findings from consumers in the UK and two US cities, as well as makers and intermediaries supporting craft businesses, the report shows how craft sales are worth £3 billion to the UK economy and that there is a growing new generation of younger craft consumers. 

Published by the Crafts Council and eight national partners, including Craft Scotland.  

Creative Resilience Diaries  

Dr Charlotte Gilmore is working with four Scottish partners including Craft Scotland on a research project to look at mapping resilience within the creative industries.  

The research project will produce several outcomes including a collective diary format that will allow artists and makers to express their thoughts, feelings and emotions around the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its impact on their working lives and practices. 

Dr Charlotte Gilmore is an Athenaeum Leadership Fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. This project is supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Athenaeum Award Fund.  

Curatorial Research Project 

Craft Scotland is collaborating with Dr Stacey Hunter, a Design Curator and Founder of Local Heroes, on a large-scale research project to look at the infrastructure of craft, to inform how curatorial development can be supported. Recent conversations have highlighted the lack of opportunities for craft curators in Scotland to launch and sustain careers resulting in fewer opportunities for makers to contextualise their practice, show work and reach a wider audience. We will share our findings in 2021/22.  

Communications & Digital Support 

We continue to support makers and promote the wider craft sector’s initiatives to a diverse audience through our online activities.  

Our website provides a year-round valuable resource to makers and those interested in craft with our  What’s On listings, maker Opportunities listings  and interesting  interviews and articles.
