Craft Scotland’s key goal is to make Scotland a place where craft is valued as culturally significant, essential to our economy and meaningful to our communities.

The global pandemic has had a significant impact on the Scottish craft sector and the Craft Scotland team and Board have been listening and gathering feedback on the positives and challenges of this time. You can read the results of our Coronavirus (COVID-19) Impact Surveys and the responsive work we carried out during March to June.

Following feedback from the sector, the Board and team have reshaped Craft Scotland’s Programme for 2020/21 to adapt to the changing needs of the sector.

We have had to make a number of difficult decisions particularly in terms of cancelling our annual Summer Show and our Conference this year due to the emerging challenges posed by the pandemic. Additionally, due to low take up in sales and a changing ecommerce landscape we have decided to suspend our Ecommerce platform, Craft Marketplace, you can read the full statement. We appreciate the serious economic impact of the pandemic on makers, and therefore we have decided to reallocate this resource to create a new Online Selling webinar series through our COMPASS programme (launching in Autumn). This free webinar series will give both makers and craft venues practical tools and tips how to generate online sales in the run up to the vital Christmas selling season.

Going forward we will also reshape our Graduate Awards and COMPASS: Next Generation programme to support recently graduated makers and those who have just started their craft business (0-1 years) in more of a meaningful way and broaden the group we can support.

Recent maker feedback has highlighted the need for increased opportunities for promotion. We are delighted to offer free profiles on the Directory with a limited time offer. Sign-up or renew during August to have a free maker profile for 8 months, until the end of March 2021. This visual platform is accessed by curators, journalists and craft audiences and benefits from additional promotion across our popular social media channels.

You can find full details of our updated Programme 2020/21 below, including any key dates for our maker open call opportunities. If you would like to get in touch about our programme, please email hello@craftscotland.org.

Connecting communities with contemporary craft.  Through Making Spaces, Craft Scotland offers opportunities for people of all ages to engage with contemporary craft and work with makers from across Scotland. The act of making can actively improve quality of life and promote social inclusion and so we work with partners to deliver long-term projects for targeted groups and communities.

Our current programme of activity is on hold due to the Coronavirus (COVID-19) but we are working with MAKE to develop a new project focusing on the provision and development of craft education within Scotland’s primary and secondary schools. Further information will available soon.

COMPASS Programme 2020/21

COMPASS is Craft Scotland’s learning and development programme created specifically for makers. COMPASS focuses on developing talent and equipping individuals with the necessary skills to create a sustainable craft career and business. COMPASS is generously supported by the William Grant Foundation and Baillie Gifford.

Established Maker Programme (4+ years in business) - Round 3

A new element in our programme, Craft Scotland will host Craft & Cultural Conversations across the year. Placing craft in a cultural context, these free talks will explore current social themes with a wide range of speakers.

Research

Market for Craft

The Market for Craft  is a rich analysis of who is buying craft, why and where. Using survey findings from consumers in the UK and two US cities, as well as makers and intermediaries supporting craft businesses, the report shows how craft sales are worth £3 billion to the UK economy and that there is a growing new generation of younger craft consumers.

Published by the Crafts Council and eight national partners, including Craft Scotland.

Creative Resilience Diaries

Dr Charlotte Gilmore is working with four Scottish partners including Craft Scotland on a research project to look at mapping resilience within the creative industries.

The research project will produce several outcomes including a collective diary format that will allow artists and makers to express their thoughts, feelings and emotions around the Coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic and its impact on their working lives and practices.

Dr Charlotte Gilmore is an Athenaeum Leadership Fellow at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland. This project is supported by the Arts and Humanities Research Council and Royal Conservatoire of Scotland Athenaeum Award Fund.

Craft Scotland is collaborating with Dr Stacey Hunter, a Design Curator and Founder of Local Heroes, on a large-scale research project to look at the infrastructure of craft, to inform how curatorial development can be supported. Recent conversations have highlighted the lack of opportunities for craft curators in Scotland to launch and sustain careers resulting in fewer opportunities for makers to contextualise their practice, show work and reach a wider audience. We will share our findings in 2021/22.
