Workshops

Having taught ceramics in higher education for over thirty years, delivering practical workshop demonstrations has been an important aspect of what I do on a regular basis.

I have delivered workshops in a number of institutions in the UK as well as taking part in teaching projects in Europe, Scandinavia, North and South America.

I have worked on a couple of projects with the Crafts Council, firstly as a mentor on the Hothouse scheme and also on the “Firing up” project, where an initiative to re-introduce the teaching of ceramics in schools was delivered. I worked as an artist in residence at three schools in Stoke on Trent where I delivered practical workshops to students.

I have also delivered workshops about ceramic printing and making at the Crafts Council as well as in a number of museums.

I have worked on a one to one basis introducing ceramic print to a maker who had received a bursary from Artist Newsletter. Most recently I worked as a mentor to a maker introducing glaze mixing and application who had received funding for a VACMA Scotland bursary.

Lecturing & Talks

Delivering lectures and talks has been part of my teaching practice in higher education throughout my career.

As a maker and educator, I have been invited to a number of institutions and museums nationally and internationally to talk about my work.

Curating

In February 2001, I was invited by the ceramic manufacturer Wedgwood to undertake a commission to produce a collection of vessels for the 100% Design exhibition at Earls Court in London.

The brief was to design and make a range of one-off bowls and compositions using the Wedgwood traditional Jasper clay bodies.

In 2015 I was invited to have a solo exhibition at the Deutsche Porzellanmuseum

in Selb, Germany. I designed and installed the exhibition, it consisted of a new body of work and a collection of pieces made from the Wedgwood Jasper clay bodies. As part of the exhibition I was invited to select a group of historical pieces from the Wedgwood archive that were to be shown alongside my work.

The Crafts Council “Firing Up” project resulted in an exhibition of ceramics produced by pupils from five selected schools in Stoke on Trent. I worked as an artist in residence introducing ceramics back into secondary education.

A selection of the student’s work was presented at Staffordshire University, I worked with John Webber the ambassador for the Firing Up project in this region on the design and installation of the exhibition.
