Rowena Brown is a ceramic artist based on the Isle of Iona.
Her method of working involves slicing and sculpting blocks of clay to create mainly architectural forms.
Over the years she has developed an approach to decoration and firing that results in multi-layered surfaces which surround enclosed spaces or expose darkened interiors. While alluding to environmental damage and abandonment, this also creates a visual interest to draw the onlooker in.
The pieces are intended quietly to evoke a response to place and provoke contemplation on community and isolation.
Rowena first studied design at Central St Martin's in London, then after a period of living and making ceramic work in California she took a Masters in fine art ceramics at Bretton Hall, University of Leeds, set within the Yorkshire Sculpture Park.
Her work has been exhibited widely and is in many private collections. It has been featured in numerous publications including Ceramic Review, The Telegraph and The Guardian.
