Mhairi Abbas is an award winning Scottish Textile Designer known for her luxury contemporary accessories. Passion for colour, design and hands on craftsmanship is the driving force of her work.
Born and raised in Shetland, these stunning islands have become a fantastic source of inspiration. Having spent much of her life exploring the wild landscapes of Shetland and experiencing the rich textile history, Mhairi’s work has become a way to express her heritage. The resulting work produced reflects an abstract of the islands land and seascapes. All the work is knitted with hand dyed Merino wool. The dying process gives beautiful gradients of colour, helping to create atmospheric compositions of colour.
Mhairi's studio is based in Dundee, Scotland where all the products are designed and made by Mhairi herself.
Mhairi Abbas has undertaken a design residency for both 2017/18 and 2018/19 at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design. During these residences Mhairi supported the Textile Design team with both tutoring and technical aspects of the undergraduate course. Working especially closely with the knitting technician and students to teach Technical skills and design.
Currently Mhairi is working on a new collection as well as working in museums and exhibitions.
