Keynote SpeakerMichael Marriott
Michael Marriott is often cited as one of Britain’s most highly regarded designers. After graduating from London College of Furniture and then the Royal College of Art, he opened his own design studio in 1993. Marriott was the winner of the Jerwood Applied Arts Prize in 1999 and has curated exhibitions at institutions including the Geffrye Museum and Camden Arts Centre.
Linda Brothwell
Linda is renowned for initiating a repair movement in the arts. She was shortlisted for Design of the Year in 2009 for her work at Experimenta Biennale entitled ‘Bench Repair Project’ and was awarded the Jerwood Makers Open in 2013 for ‘Acts of Care: The Sheffield Edition’, the first edition in the Acts of Care series. Linda is currently working on a new study and a series of nationwide ‘Acts of Care’ in partnership with museums and galleries UK wide.
Love Jönsson
Love Jönsson is a curator at the Röhsska Museum in Gothenburg, Sweden, and has published widely on modern and contemporary crafts in periodicals, catalogues, and anthologies. He was the curator for 6th Tallinn Applied Art Triennial: The Art of Collecting (2012). His most recent publication is an essay in the exhibition catalogue O Pioneers! Women Ceramic Artists 1925-1960 (Alfred: Alfred Ceramic Art Museum 2015). In the UK, Love has published reviews in Crafts magazine, Ceramic Reviewand Journal of Modern Craft.
Jasleen Kaur
Jasleen Kaur is an artist and designer based in London. She is fascinated by the malleability of culture — the adaptations in how people interact with things and the ways in which she can participate in these evolutions. Jasleen is a visiting lecturer at The Royal College of Art and devises workshops and programmes for the Victoria & Albert Museum amongst others. She was awarded the Jerwood Makers Open 2015.
Professor Tom Inns
Tom Inns is the Director of the Glasgow School of Art (GSA). He has an active interest in how strategic design can apply principles of traditional design to society’s systemic challenges. Tom studied Engineering at the University of Bristol and Design at the Royal College of Art. In 1990 he cofounded the Design Research Centre at Brunel University, becoming Director in 1996. His PhD explored the impact of design on innovation in small companies. In 2000 he moved to the University of Dundee becoming Head of Design at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art & Design (DJCAD) and then Dean. Between 2005-2010 he was Programme Director for the AHRC/EPSRC funded Designing for the 21st Century Initiative.
Jude Barber
Jude Barber is an architect and director at Collective Architecture in Glasgow. Over the past 15 years Jude has worked within, and on the fringes, of architectural practice to deliver a broad range of projects of varying scale and complexity. These include The Empire Cafe with author Louise Welsh, Seven Lochs Wetland Park, Centrepoint Community Hub and the Briggait Creation Centre, Glasgow. In 2012, Jude was shortlisted for the Architects’ Journal ‘Women in Architecture’ Emerging Architect of the Year and has won various Awards for her buildings and collaborations. She is Convenor of the Saltire Society Housing Design Awards and Board member of NVA.
Deirdre Nelson
Since graduating from Glasgow School of Art in 1992, Deirdre has pursued a parallel career in creating work for exhibition and commission and in working as an artist facilitator to various groups. Research, humour and craft technique contribute to projects which deal with relevant social and environmental issues. She designs collaborative projects which consider sustainability, legacy and agency.
Neil McGuire
Neil McGuire is a designer and design tutor who works on a range of projects and activities including; graphic design commissions, artworks, event production, curation, learning and teaching, talks, and self-initiated projects. He graduated in Communication Design at Glasgow School of Art in 2003, and runs his own studio and is teaching at GSA. Neil is interested in the interface of design and politics, architecture, and the impact of technology on society.
Hefin Jones
Hefin Jones is a London-based interdisciplinary designer with a socially engaged practice. He founded The Welsh Space Campaign and runs the Art & Design Saturday Club. He's a visiting tutor at the Department for Design at Goldsmiths University.
Professor Ken Neil
Ken is GSA’s Head of Research, he focuses on: contemporary art and theory; issues around access, inclusion and tradition in creative education; and theories of the real and the everyday. He is Sector Lead for creative and cultural practice disciplines for the Scottish Enhancement Theme 'Research-Teaching Linkages'. Ken is a member of the AHRC Peer Review College, a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and a Trustee of the UK Association of Art Historians, and currently chairs their Further and Higher Education Special Interest Group.
