Most, though not all of my mobiles are inspired by poems. When a poem evokes striking images, which stay with me I try to follow those images through. At times this means a fairly literal image such as leaves or birds. At other times I’m interested in producing something more elusive, perhaps an image which can only be seen at times or combining two images into one.
Whether it’s making a fish “swim” or a swan’s movement reflected I spend a lot of time trying to find a way to get the right effect in a way that’s light enough to be set off by air currents. Often that takes longer than it does to create the pieces themselves.
Having spent a lifetime developing craft skills in using wood and gaining experience in different techniques I enjoy exploring ways to create the shapes I want. My mobiles are largely made by laminating different wood veneers together into the shape that I need. Using veneer can give me access to strong shapes, created without waste and still preserving the grain and colouring of the wood itself and yet light enough to move easily.
