Cally Booker is a handweaver, textile designer, writer and teacher. In one-off pieces and in micro collections of accessories and homewares, she makes extensive use of multi-layered weaves. The interplay of different layers of colour gives her work its distinctive appeal. She is based in Dundee and much of her inspiration is drawn from the city: from the grandeur of its waterfront setting to the details of quirky buildings and everyday living. A recent development in her work has been to draw on her interest in social and environmental data, and data about Scotland in particular. These data describe patterns which underlie our daily experience but are often difficult to see. Incorporated into weave, the finished work offers an alternative geography that is abstracted beyond recognition.Cally is passionate about making things by hand and shares her love of weaving through The Weaving Space, a programme of workshops based in her colour-filled studio in a refurbished jute mill.
